Home Lighting Ideas That Will Give You The Feels

Do not decorate until you read about these home lighting ideas.

Rooms with the wrong lighting can definitely have an effect on your mood. Try reading in a room that has the tendency to be on the dark side or relaxing with an overhead light fixture with a 100 watt bulb in it. It’s doable but not recommended nor is it preferred. However, getting the right ingredients at the right time will make all the difference. So trust me lighting matters. Let’s start with the basics.

It is not enough to only use one type of lighting in your home. You will have different purposes for your rooms so you will need lighting that serves those purposes. The number one rule is to create layers with your lighting.

Not all spaces will just have one function so layering provides flexibility in a space. If you intend to have a multipurpose room, it is recommended that you install dimmers. This way you can add table lamps, sconces and even some track lighting to set the mood when you are ready to wind down.

Be consistent with your bulb colors. Not all bulbs give off the same white light and there are a few different shades you can choose from. The different shades are known as color temperatures and they range from soft white to daylight.

One of the more popular shades are the LED lights which fall into the category of warm color temperatures. I prefer to use the LED lights in the bedroom, living room or any space where I want to create a relaxing atmosphere.

This choice in lighting works well with a rustic look and earthy tones. Let’s take a closer look at the 3 basic layers of lighting-ambient, accent and task. There is actually a lighting formula to lighting a room with the appropriate amount of light. The metric used here is Standard. We are measuring feet in this equation.

Room width x Room length x 1.5= Amount of watts to light a room appropriately

Ambient Lighting

The most general lighting or commonly used lighting is ambient. Ambient lighting can be considered the “natural light” that fills the rooms or it can just be hitting the light switch. This type of lighting will prevent you from hurting yourself as you move around the room and it comes in many forms. You can intensify the natural sunlight that comes in through the windows by painting the walls white.

Opt for chandeliers and pendants in the foyer area or in spaces with higher ceilings. Recessed lighting is great for ceilings of any height and will bring warmth into your space. You may want to consider these LED home lighting ideas if white walls are not your thing.  Show appreciation for ambient lighting by making it apart of the decor. Create an exceptional focal point by using an LED strip to highlight a few wall mirrors.

When the lights are off this masterpiece on display will definitely be a mood changer. LED lights can also be used for under cabinet lighting or to light up your kitchen drawers for some flare and function. Another show stopper is to highlight a wall mounted TV with back lighting.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is pretty much what it says. It accents or focuses on a particular object or area of your choice. Create visual interest with some up lighting. Uplighting is the term used to describe light towards the ceiling. It involves using fixtures such as wall lights or sconces that should be mounted higher than normal to draw the light upwards. Highlighting a painting or decorative piece in this way will definitely make an exquisite statement.

You can bring life to that dark hallway by installing some track lighting and using them to accent your beautiful family photos. The flexibility of track lighting allows you to change direction of the light for more accent options. Choose recessed lighting to accent special features of your home and to give the illusion of a bigger space.

Task Lighting

Poor lighting can turn the smallest project into a chore so you will need to incorporate some task lighting. Task lighting is aimed at stimulating productivity until a particular task has been completed. Although this type of lighting is thought to be for a specific purpose only and not necessarily for decorating there are many ways to add a decorative flare.

Brighter bulbs will allow you to see better so choose a lamp that can be mounted with a swing arm. The arm will allow for lighting flexibility which gives you the option to focus the light where it is needed. They even have ones that can be clipped onto the edge of a desk or counter.

Light up your those dark corners with floor lamps. They create the type of task lighting you need to curl up with a good book after a long day. There are many varieties and colors that will suit all your decorative needs. Those dark and lonely corners will now have a purpose while offering some style too.

Task lighting is often needed in the bathroom for daily grooming rituals. It is recommended that you flank the bathroom mirror with vertical sconces on each side to keep your makeup looking classy and not like a clown.

Because artificial lighting is different from natural lighting, you may want to encourage the look of natural lighting in areas of your home as much as possible. I’ve actually stepped out of the house with a blue shoe on one foot and a black one on the other. Using 4000K will mimic the natural daylight.

Indoor Home Lighting Ideas

Bath Bar– Try a modern approach to your lighting needs. Nothing says modern lighting like the sleek design of a bath bar.

Pair– Add visual balance by applying pairs of light. This is easy to do with table lamps on each side of the room or sofa.

Wall Washers– A type of recessed lighting that allows you to manually angle the light to create a desired effect.

Mix Lighting– Use a number of different types of lighting fixtures to bring in the layers.

Pendants- Hanging pendant lights will free up space while properly lighting it as well. There are many to choose from making your lighting options versatile.

Stick-on Lights– These are battery operated lights that provide a budget friendly way to add in some lighting options without the commitment. Include a few in your kitchen cupboards or underneath or anywhere more light is needed.

A nicely designed space starts with color and lighting. Poor lighting can be the downfall of your overall design. In the meantime, Happy Decorating!

    1. Hi Aziza,
I apologize for not making that clear in the article. There are two systems of measurement-Standard and Metric. The US. uses standard so this equation is measured in feet. 1. Hi Kyle,

  10. Wow, this is by far an impressive read. I had no idea how much difference lighting could create. Please can you advise me on the best type of lighting for my kids rooms. My 10 year old struggles with bedtime routines so I was hoping for something that would be subtle enough to encourage sleep. Thank you

    1. Hey Evelynn,
Yes, lighting plays a big part in the overall look of things. They have some really cool night lights for kids on Amazon and Wayfair. They even have some superhero ones that attach to the wall and give off a soft glow but is a way to encourage your little one that he/she is being protected while they sleep. I hope this helps. Thank you for your comment and please be sure to check back in for more of your decorating needs.

  11. A lot of fun ideas about different types of lighting and what works best for different situations. I am curious about the bath bar lighting. What is that?

    1. Hi Lynne,
A bath bar is a light in the shape of a long rectangle. It’s like the shape of a bar of gold, just a little longer. I hope that helps. I am happy to see that you found this article useful. Thank you for your comment and have a great day!

  13. You hit it right on that lighting can make a huge difference in how a space looks and feels. I especially like the part about ambient lighting. Thanks for sharing a great article Davona.

  14. Hi Davonna, I really appreciated this blog. I didn’t know about the various lighting schemes. I struggle with needing a lot more light as my eyes “mature” 🤓. Being in the rear side of my building with a lot of trees in my window view does not bring a lot of natural light. What do you suggest for a small apartment, somewhat spacious with high ceilings. Very modern. Need your expertise! Thank you

    1. Hi Marette,
Thank you for your question. Because you are in an apartment and cannot do any hard wiring, I would recommend a couple of floor lamps placed in the darker places or corners of the apartment. If you need a more focused light like for reading, let’s say in your bedroom. I would suggest getting a couple of lamps that can be mounted on the edge of your nightstands with a swing arm. The swing arm will allow you to focus the light where you need it. I hope this helps. Please do not hesitate if you have anymore questions. Thanks again.
